Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book Al-Istiqāmah: “When the Muhajirun (emigrants) arrived in Madinah, the unmarried men used to stay in a designated house separate from those who were married. A bachelor would not live among the married, for the mixing of these two groups is a cause of temptation. When men mix with women, it is like mixing fire with wood. Likewise, the presence of unmarried men among married families can lead to temptation, since there is nothing to prevent it. When the causes of temptation exist and nothing restrains them, temptation will prevail.”
